PRODUCTS, PERFORMANCE & MATERIALS

Are Fortis jackets fully waterproof?

Yes, all Fortis jackets that are described as waterproof are fully waterproof. These garments use our drop-liner construction with a 20,000mm hydrostatic head rating, meaning the fabric can withstand the pressure of a 20-metre column of water before any moisture penetrates. This level of waterproofing is suitable for prolonged exposure to heavy rain and harsh weather. To maintain comfort, these jackets also feature a 20,000g breathability rating, allowing moisture and heat to escape during movement. Not all Fortis garments are waterproof, so we clearly state waterproof performance on each relevant product page.

What is a drop-liner jacket?

A drop-liner jacket uses a separate waterproof liner suspended inside the outer fabric. This construction improves comfort, breathability, and durability compared to bonded shell jackets. It allows the outer fabric to breathe naturally while the liner handles waterproofing, making drop-liner jackets ideal for long days outdoors and variable weather.

Are Fortis jackets breathable?

Yes. Fortis jackets are designed to balance waterproof protection with breathability. Our fabrics and constructions allow moisture vapour to escape, helping reduce condensation during movement. This makes them comfortable for activities like walking, hiking, and everyday outdoor use where temperature and effort levels change throughout the day.

What fabrics do you use in Fortis clothing?

We use a range of durable, purpose-built fabrics chosen specifically for outdoor performance. These include ripstop materials for strength, waterproof drop-liner constructions for weather protection, and technical printed fabrics such as Pro Technical Tweed.Where possible, we actively look to use recycled or more sustainable fabric alternatives without compromising performance or durability. Every product page on our website includes a dedicated section detailing the exact fabric composition and materials used, so you can make an informed choice before purchasing.

What is Pro Technical Tweed (Pro TT)?

Pro Technical Tweed (Pro TT) is a printed technical fabric that replicates the look of traditional tweed while delivering modern performance. Unlike real tweed, it’s lightweight, waterproof, low-maintenance, and quick-drying, offering classic style without the drawbacks of traditional wool tweed.

FIT, COMFORT & USE

How should Fortis jackets and trousers fit?

Fortis jackets are designed to allow comfortable movement and layering. They should fit comfortably over a shirt or mid-layer without feeling restrictive, with adjustable features such as drawcord waists and cuffs allowing you to fine-tune the fit depending on how you wear the jacket.Fortis trousers are sized by waist measurement and inside leg length to help achieve an accurate fit. They also feature waist adjusters and hem adjusters, allowing you to further tailor the fit for comfort, movement, and footwear choice during outdoor use.

What is the difference between lightweight and heavyweight Fortis jackets?

Lightweight jackets prioritise packability, breathability, and ease of movement, making them ideal for mild conditions and active use. Heavier jackets offer more coverage and protection for prolonged exposure to harsher weather. Choosing between them depends on your typical activities and conditions.

Are Fortis clothes designed for active use or everyday wear?

Both. Fortis clothing is built for real outdoor use while maintaining a clean, practical design suitable for everyday wear. Whether you’re walking, travelling, working outdoors, or heading into town, our garments are designed to adapt to your lifestyle.

SIZING

How does Fortis sizing work?

Fortis uses practical sizing designed for outdoor wear. Each product includes sizing guidance to help you choose the best fit. If you plan to layer underneath, you may prefer a slightly roomier fit.

Are any Fortis products unisex?

Yes. Some Fortis garments, such as certain coats and accessories, are designed as unisex styles. These pieces focus on function, coverage, and adjustability rather than gender-specific shaping.

What should I do if I’m between sizes?

If you’re between sizes, consider how you’ll use the garment. Size up for layering or a looser fit, or size down for a neater silhouette. If unsure, our team can help advise before purchase.

What if the size I need isn’t listed on the website?

As a made-to-order brand, we’re often able to accommodate sizes outside our standard range. If we haven’t made a particular garment in your size before, we’ll need to liaise with our Head of Production to assess lead times and feasibility for creating a new pattern. This may involve an additional cost and a longer turnaround time due to the extra work involved. Please email or call us, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

MANUFACTURING & BRAND

Where is Fortis clothing made?

All Fortis outdoor clothing is made to order in Devon, UK. Producing our garments locally allows us to maintain high standards of quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail, while supporting a made-to-order approach that reduces unnecessary overproduction. Some Fortis accessories are sourced from trusted specialist manufacturers outside the UK. These partners are chosen carefully to ensure the same standards of quality, durability, and performance that Fortis is known for.

What does “made to order” mean, and why does Fortis use this approach?

Made to order means your garment is produced specifically for you after purchase, rather than being made in bulk and held in stock. Fortis uses this approach to prioritise quality over quantity, reduce unnecessary waste, and ensure each item receives individual attention during production. This allows us to focus on craftsmanship and durability, creating outdoor clothing designed to last rather than disposable fashion.

CARE, REPAIRS & WARRANTY

How do I wash Fortis Clothing?

Always follow the care label inside your garment, as this provides the most accurate instructions for that specific product. As a general guide, we recommend washing our outdoor clothing items using a non-bio detergent on a gentle 30°C cycle with a spin speed no higher than 600rpm. High wash temperatures or aggressive cycles can cause colour fading and may damage the waterproof membrane in waterproof products. We recommend drip drying only and avoiding tumble dryers.

How do I maintain waterproof performance over time?

Regular cleaning and occasional reproofing help maintain waterproof performance. How often your Fortis® kit needs reproofing depends on how frequently and intensively it’s used, so we recommend checking garments regularly. If you notice water no longer beading on the surface during light rain, it may be time to reproof.Pay particular attention to high-wear areas such as shoulders, seams, elbows, knees, and sleeve creases. For best results, use only our Fortis® Spray-On Water Repellent, as other products may be less effective or could damage the material. A small bottle is sufficient to reproof at least two garments.

Can Fortis clothing be repaired?

Yes. At Fortis, we believe in longevity, not fast fashion, and many of our garments can be repaired to extend their life. Repairs can include anything from patching tears to replacing waterproof linings, with prices typically ranging from £10–£100, depending on the work required. If your garment needs attention, please contact the team or complete the Fortis® Returns Form before sending anything back. Our team will assess the item and provide a quote before any work is carried out.

What warranty do Fortis products come with?

All Fortis garments come with a 1-year warranty unless otherwise stated. This warranty covers manufacturing defects only and applies under normal use. Proof of purchase must be provided if requested before any repairs or warranty work is carried out.The warranty does not cover loss, accidental damage, breakage, changes in appearance, or gradual wear caused by misuse, careless handling, or washing outside of our care instructions.
